A List of Things to Do When Writer’s Block Hits

If you’re a writer, you’re likely familiar with the odd, sinking feeling that occurs when you’re staring at a page or your laptop and the words…just aren’t there.

When my mind goes blank, I usually blame it on one of three things:

  1. Lack of sleep
  2. Hunger
  3. My creative juices have just run out

I personally have never had much luck trying to force myself to write through writer’s block, so here’s a list of other activities you can try to burst through the block.

Ways to Beat Writer’s Block

  1. Take a nap.
  2. Eat a snack.
  3. Go on a nice, long walk and try not to think about writing.
  4. Play with a pet.
  5. Play a board game or video game for a bit.
  6. Listen to your favorite song or artist.
  7. Research starting a new hobby and take the first step.
  8. Read a book! (Almost always helps me.)
  9. Update your Goodreads or personal blog.
  10. Watch an episode of your favorite current show.
  11. Call or text a friend or family member.
  12. Go on a run or bike ride.
  13. Meditate or do some yoga.
  14. Just call it a day and try again tomorrow! (Your writing isn’t going anywhere.)
