Should You Advertise on BookTok? Pros and Cons

There’s no doubt that Booktok is a flourishing epicenter for finding popular reads.

But as an author, blogger or writer, is it worth spending time advertising your content on there?

As a professional social media and digital content creator, I have spent a lot of time learning about the intricacies of TikTok. It’s not an easy platform to crack!

Let’s go over some of the pros and cons of participating in Booktok on a creator level.

Pros of Advertising on Booktok

  • You can directly speak to your target audience of readers or other authors/writers.
  • People on Booktok are likely already looking for new things to read, so they are better primed to look at your content.
  • If you create quality videos, you might grow a following and increase the likelihood of sales, website visits, etc.
  • It offers a creative way to showcase your book, characters and other content. You can also show people who you are as an author.

Cons of Advertising on Booktok

  • Creating quality videos takes more time, skills and effort than posting on other social media platforms.
  • There are a lot of voices on Booktok. You really have to work to make your content stand out.
  • There are limitations on linking to your content, which means that it might be hard to direct people to your website or book.
  • If you’re camera shy, you might struggle with creating content featuring yourself. (But that doesn’t mean you can’t create other types of videos.)
